5G for Industrial Applications in the UK – Current Reality

5G coverage maps from UK mobile operators paint an optimistic picture. The honest picture is more nuanced. This guide covers what 5G actually delivers for industrial applications today, where 4G LTE remains the practical choice, and how to specify hardware that covers both without overcommitting on the wrong technology at the wrong time.

UK 5G Coverage – The Honest Picture

As of 2026, 5G coverage in the UK is concentrated in urban and suburban areas. EE leads on geographic coverage, but rural and semi-rural locations – where the majority of industrial monitoring, utilities, and infrastructure sites are – often have 4G LTE at best. The Sub-6 GHz 5G bands (N1, N3, N28, N77, N78) that industrial routers use are rolling out progressively but coverage maps frequently show “coverage” that amounts to marginal signal in practice.

What 5G Offers Over 4G for Industrial Use

The headline figures – multi-gigabit downlink speeds – are relevant to consumer video streaming. For industrial applications, the relevant 5G improvements are lower latency (sub-10ms in ideal conditions versus 20-50ms on 4G), more consistent throughput in congested areas, and network slicing capability for prioritising critical traffic. For remote monitoring, SCADA polling, and standard M2M applications, 4G LTE Cat 12 (600Mbps theoretical) provides more than adequate throughput. The latency improvement from 5G matters for time-sensitive industrial control applications.

Applications That Benefit from 5G Now

High-bandwidth applications in areas with genuine 5G coverage: high-definition video surveillance streams from multiple cameras, industrial vision systems requiring high data throughput, and applications requiring multiple simultaneous high-bandwidth connections from a single site. Applications Where 4G Remains the Right Answer

Standard SCADA polling, Modbus gateway applications, environmental monitoring, remote metering – these transfer kilobytes per day, not gigabytes. 4G LTE is entirely adequate and provides better geographic coverage. Specifying 5G hardware for a remote pumping station that transfers 50KB of telemetry data per day is overspecification.
